Introducing the Fight Girl Cast

Like I promised, here's a little info about the cast of characters, the actors playing them, and, consequently, a little about the story of Fight Girl Battle World. FYI, the play is in many ways an homage to sci-fi, action, and cult films and TV series, such as Star Wars, Star Trek, Firefly, Blade Runner, and others, so it'll be a fun ride. Now, presenting the cast of Fight Girl Battle World!

Rebecca Morris plays E-V, a street prize fighter who also happens to be the last human female in all the known galaxies.

Rebecca is a local actor, performing in plays and movies. If you saw our production of Angels in America this fall, you'll remember her as Harper Pitt. Badass that she is, Rebecca choreographed most of the fights in the show.

Jake Bowden is GENERAL DAN'H, leader of the insurgency against the United Galactic Alliance/Council (UGC), the intergalactic government.

Jake is a student at UNCA studying theatre. In addition to his acting, Jake built many of the set pieces you'll see in the production. Little known fact: He and Charlie went to the same high school, but in different centuries.

Lauren Kriel (that's me!) plays J'AN JAH, Dan'h's Ursalean, gender-bending pilot.

Lauren is graduate of Warren Wilson College, where she majored in theatre/English. As a younger sibling, she's glad she finally gets to be on the winning side of fights (although choreographed).

Bobby Abrahamson is ADON-RA, the last human male in the known galaxies, notoriously known as a vengeful psychokilling space terrorist.

Bobby is a theatre student at UNCA and was recently an administrative intern for NC Stage. Do you know any good jokes? You want to hear this guy's laugh -- it's infectious.

Jason Williams is LC-4, a "robot robot" who was once a robot playwright and soon becomes E-V's right-hand tin can.

Jason does it all. He not only plays two other roles besides LC-4, but he also designed the lights for this production. Jason directs as well, and his next project is As You Like It with the Montford Park Players.

Jessica Lewis is MIKAH MONOCH, a torture-obsessed agent for the UGC.

Jessica is yet another lover of sci-fi. She's a big "Dr. Who" fan and a "Firefly" fan, too. (The list goes on, of course.) She is studying literature at UNCA.

Alison Young plays both ZIMLEK, E-V's bookie/coach on Battle World, and COMMANDER G'BRIL, the UGC's second in command to the president.

Alison is a graduate of Mars Hill College and is a performer of all kinds. She sings, acts, and performs burlesque! Did you see the New Year's Eve eve performance by Bombs Away Cabaret here at NC Stage? If so, then you've seen her do her thing.

Travis Kelley is PRESIDENT YA-WI, commander in chief of the UGC, who initiated the Human Wars, an almost successful attempt to wipe out all human life.

Travis is a sci-fi movie devotee. You might recognize him from local theatre productions around town, or perhaps you've seen him at the Asheville Pizza & Brewing Company, where he works.

Bradshaw Call plays both the ZOOKEEPER, a trained keeper of the most endangered species in the galaxy, as well as the ANCHOR, the glamorous newscaster spreading news to the farthest reaches of the UGC core planets.

Bradshaw is a man of many talents. The spaceships? He built them. The term 'space galactica?' He coined it. Just wait til you hear all the excellent character voices he uses in the show...

We open this Thursday, January 19, so grab a friend or two, don a costume if you like, and get your qwarding blarkbutt down to the theatre to see this show. We've got one hell of show for you.

Fight Girl Battle World: January 19-February 4

Here we are in the second week of January 2012, and here at NC Stage, we've hit the ground running in this new year. We're gearing up for our next Catalyst Series production, Fight Girl Battle World by Qui Nguyen, which opens next week. Just yesterday, cast member Rebecca Morris (remember Harper Pitt from Angels? That's her!) and director Charlie Flynn-McIver were interviewed by Dick Kowal on WCQS about the show. Cast members are going all over town putting up posters and getting the word out about the production. The cast also recently filmed some promotional videos in character about the play (which we'll post here once they're done). In the mood for pizza? You might just find a flier for Fight Girl... atop your pizza box from Asheville Pizza and Brewing Company. We're excited about this play, so understandably, we want everyone to know about it. In fact, thanks for reading this! Now buy a ticket and go tell 10 friends to do the same. Joking! But not really.

So, Charlie is directing this production, but the big question is, "Where did you even find this play in the first place, dude?" More on the cast and their work on the production later, because what I have for you today is a link to an article from American Theatre magazine from October 2010. Perhaps you recall lots of social media posts around that time from NC Stage telling you to read an article about Charlie Flynn-McIver and Scott Treadway. Well, the article just after it in the print version of the magazine is about the Fight Girl Battle World playwright, Qui Nguyen, his aesthetic, and his work with Vampire Cowboys Theatre Company. It's worth a read, and it's fascinating!

I hope everyone’s having a great Holiday, whatever way you celebrate. I also hope everyone’s had a great year. NC Stage has had a tremendous season so far with a production of Hedwig And The Angry Inch and both parts, count ‘em, BOTH parts of Angels In America, and then two companies of Live From WVL Radio Theatre: It’s A Wonderful Life and, of course, The 12 Dates Of Christmas. Dozens of actors, designers, technicians, volunteers and administrators have been making it all happen and more than 5,000 seats have been occupied during all this. All in all one of the biggest seasons we’ve ever done.

And we can’t thank you all enough. If you’ve bought a ticket for one of those seats, given a donation, told or brought a friend, hell, even if you’ve just “retweeted” one of our twitter posts, you’re a big part of the success of NC Stage. If you would still like to make a donation, you still can. And what a great time to get in that last minute tax deduction before the New Year!

But we’re not done for the season! We’re just getting started! Our New Year starts off when Neela Munoz (director, Boeing Boeing) and I team up again as she directs me and her husband Billy (actor, Fully Committed) in Love Child. These are two of the nicest, most talented and funniest people I know and I can’t wait to work with them again.

Immediate Theatre Project returns after their brilliant production of The Glass Menagerie last season with a great new play, Circle Mirror Transformation. And the season finishes up in May with one of the best new comedies of the past several years, In The Next Room Or The Vibrator Play.

We wish you a terrific New Year with lots of laughs and good times. And we hope that some of those good times happen at NC Stage! Be safe out there and watch out for others.

Okay. So it’s just you and me, right? Here’s the deal. I am NOT a procrastinator. Okay maybe I am a little bit but I’ll talk about that later. Truth is, December has snuck up on me as the Fall has been killer busy with over 90 performances at NC Stage and more than 5,600 tickets sold to those events, plus the education program and fundraising, (more on that in a later post). Anyway, I’m just peeking up and it’s December??? The week of Christmas??? How did THAT happen?

So I’m finishing up some work at the office and getting my Christmas shopping done. And I’m looking to you for last minute gift ideas. We’re offering $25 Anytime tickets for any of our mainstage productions the remainder of the season but Angie is already going to those. Heh, heh. There is also some great art out there and I’ve got my eye on a few things. In fact I was recently linterviewed about that in the Mountain Xpress. Check it out!

But I’m looking for something like that. Local, experiential, meaningful. Art or performances? Lessons? Memberships to cultural institutions?

After a recent performance of Angels in America, a long time audience member of NC Stage stopped me in the lobby. She said, “I know that people in the theatre don’t make a lot of money and I know this show was hard work, but the experiences I have at this theatre like I did tonight make me realize, yet again, that theatre is important. It really is. Thank you for being here.”

I share this story with you because it’s not just the people on stage or behind the scenes she is thanking. It's all the folks like you who contribute to our Annual Fund that make our work possible.

This is a spoiler alert for anyone who has not seen Part 1: Millennium Approaches. Don't read! But we don't want you to leave this blog empty handed. So here's something I thought was funny.

Previously on Angels in America…

In the last moments of Part 1: Millennium Approaches, Prior Walter, a gay man who has been diagnosed with AIDS, was sleeping fitfully when an Angel crashed through the ceiling of his bedroom. The Angel greeted him as a prophet, announcing “The Great Work begins.”

It wasn’t the first strange thing that had happened to Prior since his diagnosis. Two of his ancestors had visited him in the middle of the night, claiming they were heralds. A flaming book appeared to him while he was at the AIDS clinic, and he heard his perfectly ordinary Italian-American nurse suddenly begin speaking a Hebrew prayer. His cat ran away, his lover left, and the only bright spot left in his life was his old friend Belize. Belize is a nurse, and visited Prior at St. Vincent’s Hospital, where he also works, promising that he will be there for Prior, no matter what.

When Prior’s health began to decline, his lover Louis couldn’t handle the pressure and left him, moving out of the apartment they had shared for four and a half years. Louis works in the Brooklyn Appellate Court as a word processor, where he met Joe Pitt, a law clerk. He and Joe have been having a low-key flirtation, and at the end of Millennium Approaches, Louis and Joe leave Central Park together, presumably to go to Louis’s apartment.

Joe Pitt is a conservative Mormon Republican lawyer who has wrestled with his sexuality for his whole life. He is dissatisfied with his job clerking for Justice Wilson, but feels compelled to stay in Brooklyn because of his mentally unstable wife, Harper. Joe admits to Harper that he has never had sexual feelings for her, and he comes out to his mother, Hannah, during a very difficult phone call to her home in Salt Lake City.

Joe’s mentor is the notoriously powerful Roy Cohn. Roy very much wants Joe to move to Washington D.C. to take a position in the Justice Department, where he can be Roy’s man on the inside, helping Roy combat a committee that wants to disbar him.

Roy is also fighting, more privately, an AIDS diagnosis. When we last see him, he and Joe have a fight that turns physical when Joe refuses to go to Washington, and Roy confesses that he engaged in unethical behavior to make sure convicted spy Ethel Rosenberg got the death penalty. After Joe leaves, Roy collapses in pain, and Ethel herself appears, telling him ”The shit’s about to hit the fan, Roy. Millennium approaches.” Ethel calls 911 for Roy, and an ambulance is dispatched to take him to St. Vincent’s Hospital.

Harper Pitt is married to Joe. She is agoraphobic and stays in their Brooklyn apartment all day, taking Valium and talking to imaginary people. One of these people is Mr. Lies, a travel agent who tempts her with a vacation to Antarctica. During one Valium-induced hallucination, she and Prior meet, bewilderingly. Harper intuits that Prior is very sick, and Prior has a similar intuition that her “husband’s a homo.” After Joe comes out to her, she calls to Mr. Lies in anguish, who offers to take her away. They vanish together.

Hannah Pitt is Joe’s mother. After Joe calls her, drunk, in the middle of the night and comes out to her, Hannah immediately sells her house and flies to New York. Joe fails to meet her at the airport, so she sets out on her own, accidentally ending up in the Bronx before getting directions from a homeless woman to the Mormon Visitors’ Center.

Millennium Approaches ends in turmoil, all of its characters on the brink of some cataclysmic change. The action of Angels in America: Perestroika picks up immediately after Angels in America: Millennium Approaches.

So you just saw Part 1 of Angels In America last week. We’re so glad you came! We’ve had some great responses to Angels In America Part 1 Millennium Approaches. People have been leaping to their feet and stopping us in the lobby and posting on Facebook with things like: “Angels in America at North Carolina Stage Company is one of the best productions I've ever seen...again! Every single performance is exquisite and it's amazing it can be so big in such a small space - BRAVO!!! If you live in Asheville, GO, and if you don't, consider driving up to see it!”

Perhaps you agree. Perhaps you don’t. Either way, we wanted to open up the blog for a discussion. One of the best parts of experiencing a play is sharing your thoughts about the acting, direction, the story, the themes. Whatever. So feel free to post away and join in the discussion with other folks who’ve seen this particular production. But be warned, those of you who haven’t seen it, spoiler alert! (But not to worry. There’s ample opportunity to see both parts in the coming weeks.)

I can’t express my appreciation enough to those people who choose to help NC Stage achieve its mission of creating professional theatre and education programming that affects people. Theatre can also help us grapple with the big questions—religion, politics, existence. We do not pretend to offer answers; instead, plays can be a catalyst to discussion and exploration. And when theatre is used as an educational tool, students are given access to a rich world of imagination, collaboration and creativity that serves them beyond school and helps them synthesize the raw facts and figures taught in core subjects.

Theatre is about telling a story and telling a story is what the world uses to understand the world. Bard-a-thon Fundraising Tips

The Bard-a-thon is quickly approaching (THIS WEEKEND!), so as the top individual fundraiser in the 2^nd annual Bard-a-thon (2009), I have some tips for y’all…

Who to contact: friends and family (near and far), co-workers, teachers, mentors… really anyone you think might give money, even a couple bucks. The worst someone can tell you is no. We do recommend going to individuals rather than businesses.

Tell them (briefly) what the Bard-a-thon is and WHY YOU’RE PARTICIPATING: This is key. This makes it a personal appeal. Even if it’s simply, “I haven’t read aloud since I was 15 and it seems like a good time,” it gives it a nice touch. If you want to throw in something about how important theatre/reading/Shakespeare/NC Stage is to you, go for it. We are kicking off the Bard-a-thon on the eve of National Arts and Humanities Month, after all.

State your fundraising goal. If your goal is $200 and you’re sending your email appeal to 20 people, it makes it easy for them to see their place as a piece in the fundraising puzzle. (Then, when you get a response saying they’ll give, THANK THEM INDIVIDUALLY. They’ll be more likely to help you out again in the future.)

Mention which plays and parts you’ll be reading. Tell them what time the plays you’re in begin (all plays have a designated start time), and that they can watch in person at NC Stage or online - give them the link! - fo FREE.

If you’re in it for prizes, mention that… but perhaps less bluntly than “I’m in this to win prizes, so give me your money.” Friends like helping friends win things, ‘cause sometimes they share. (Or if they don’t share, they feel a need to reciprocate that assistance in some other capacity in the future.)

In my experience, it’s good to email early (now-ish) and then right before the Bard-a-thon kicks off (Friday afternoon), reminding them they can watch AND donate throughout the weekend. Oh yeah! Tell ‘em viewers can win prizes too!

Guess what? It's time to vote once again! No, it's not November yet (though there are City Council elections this year), but it is time for the Mountain Xpress' yearly poll: Best of WNC.

We've been voted Best Local Theatre for the past five years, and won some of the best live performing arts events over the years as well. Categories in which you might want to vote for us (or related people) are: Local theatre company, Local actor (male or female), and Live show of 2010: local performing arts event.

As for Best Local Actor (male or female), we have a lot of talented folks grace our stage, so I won't list names here, but if you care to come in and browse some old playbills or ask, "Who was that one actor in That One Intense Show and That Other Neat Play?" we'd be more than happy to help you out.

Be a Witness to 'Witness'

Last night I was fortunate enough to go see the final dress rehearsal of the Flay Rock Playhouse production of Agatha Christie's Witness for the Prosecution. Angie's directing it and a number of familiar faces from NC Stage were gracing the stage, so I went in expecting a good show. This was only the second Flat Rock show I've seen, but they've both been outstanding, and also in non-traditional spaces.

My first FRP experience was last summer seeing 12 Angry Men in the Historic Courthouse and Witness is in their new downtown Hendersonville space on S. Main Street, or Playhouse Downtown, as it's called. Its setup is that of theatre in the round, so there's seating on every side of the set, and really, no matter where you're seated, you have a good view of the action. And action there's plenty. I hadn't read or seen any Agatha Christie prior to seeing the play, I'm sorry to say, but, wow, she was a talented writer. And speaking of talent, the ten (or was it nine? There's some double-casting) actors really made the play pop.

Angie asked us not to reveal the ending, so I won't, but, boy, are there a LOT of plot twists. Kind of unbelievable how intricate and detailed Christie gets... it reminded me of a story I heard on NPR about her writing and the writing of some nuns that was analyzed to study the progression of Alzheimer's.

But I'm getting off track... go see Witness for the Prosecution at Playhouse Downtown. You won't regret it. Trust me.

Oooo... trust is a kind of creepy word after seeing that play.

Alaska Reece Vance as Laura and Callan White as Amanda in The Glass Menagerie

We're headed into our final week of performances and we've heard good things, nay, great things from both patrons and reviewers alike. Why, just last Friday the Asheville Citizen-Times published its review of the production in the Take 5 Entertainment section, saying:

"Director Hans Meyer's vision is clear to the end and perfectly unites Williams' grand melodrama with the intimate space at N.C. Stage. [...] Knowing that Tom carries with him much of the playwright's own baggage, both the play and this haunting production make you wonder whether Williams ever got any peaceful sleep in his life."

And on Sunday, as folks were leaving the theatre after the curtain call, I heard one patron say to another, "I read The Glass Menagerie in high school and it was nothing like that!" To which the other responded, "This was a good show."

Charlie said this after seeing the show for the first time: "You know who sees a lot of theatre? This guy. Glass Menagerie is one of the finest productions I've seen in some time. Uniformly, superbly acted and deftly directed. Funny, heartbreaking, urgent and vital. You will do yourself a tremendous favor to see it."

Shoe Company to City Museum: Warehouse to Funhouse

Just the other day, I was looking up some information about Tennessee Williams on Wikipedia and found a remarkable and exciting anecdote in the 'Education' section of his biography. "Williams was seven years old in 1918 when his father was promoted to a job at the home office of the International Shoe Company in St. Louis." If you're thinking, 'Wow, Lauren, you're really behind the times, of course Williams drew from his personal experience to write The Glass Menagerie... it's said to be semi-autobiographical,' then you've gone down the wrong lane. I was excited by the actual name of the company his father worked for: the International Shoe Company.

See the thing is, I grew up in central Illinois, so St. Louis has always been a nice little day trip to go see exciting/cultural/historical things in the city, and in 2005, I went to the CITY Museum for the first time with a group of friends. WOW! It's possibly the most fun you'll ever have in any 'museum' in the world. And... it's an old shoe factory. The old factory building of the International She Company, in fact. The very "warehouse" Tennessee refers to in the play that caused Tom such misery (or Missouri?) is now a destination for exploration and excitement. I've told numerous people about it and pretty much whenever I've been in the area, I've brought out-of-town friends to explore it with me. I've been three or four times myself and it seems like there's more to explore every time.

As far as I recall, there's no signifier letting folks know that such a big figure in American literature and theatre once worked there in its warehouse days. However, after some searching, I found a blog mentioning it as well as a news release from the St. Louis Convention & Visitor's Commission listing sights in St. Louis connected with Tennessee Williams for this year's celebration of the 100th year of his birth. While Tom says, "You think I'm crazy about the warehouse?," I'd argue that most people are crazy about the 'warehouse' these days with its current incarnation as a funhouse of history and adventure. From the caves to the slides (made from old shoe chutes!), CITY Museum has so much to explore - both inside the building and out - so I highly recommend the trip when you're anywhere within five hours of it. It boggles the mind to think that such joy comes from a place that caused Tennessee Williams to have a nervous breakdown.

Designer Interview: Props! with Jessica

As we approach tech week(end), we've got some interviews with designers coming up on the blog for your reading pleasure. Today, we've got an interview with Jessica Kammerud, props mistress for The Glass Menagerie. Enjoy!

Lauren (on behalf of NCSC): So Jessica, when did you first encounter this play, The Glass Menagerie?

Jessica (JK): I know I read it in high school at some point, but this is my first experience working on the play, and I've actually never seen a production of it, so I'm excited to come at it with a fresh set of eyes.

NCSC: What's the most intriguing prop you've found or are still looking for?

JK: The actual menagerie. No question. It's a challenge and intriguing at the same time because if I were to look for real glass animal figurines, it'd be financially prohibitive since they're collector's items and also an acting hazard because of the potential for breakage.

NCSC: So what are you planning to do for the menagerie?

JK: Right now I'm planning on making them. I'll be constructing the animals myself through a resin casting process. I've got some rubber animals from A.C. Moore and I'll be making the casts of either half of an animal, then pouring the resin in. That's the plan. I'll let you know how it works out.

NCSC: Outside of the menagerie, what's been your biggest challenge prop-wise?

JK: Finding the piece of furniture the menagerie is supposed to sit on. Same thing with the table for the Victrola. The challenge is that it needs to be a certain height and shape -- desk height and end table shape -- but tables built recently tend to be shorter. I have found some really nice tables, but they're way beyond our budget. And we can't borrow people's furniture because almost everything is being painted white.

NCSC: Well that must really limit your options... how's that working out?

JK: It's going to look pretty amazing, but it is a bit constricting with regard to borrowing items, as I mentioned. The white of the set and the props is really to emphasize the "memory" aspect of what Tennessee Williams called "a memory play." The only things not being painted white are the things left behind by the absent Wingfield father, the Victrola and the frame of his picture. The white really gives a sense of the blank canvas on which to present the story.

NCSC: So how does the number of props for this show fit in the range of shows you've worked on?

JK: It's pretty average, so not a lot of props, but not super sparse either. However, since most everything is white, I've been able to make some interesting choices about detail since we don't want it all to blend together. It's nice to see just how a simple line can give an item the right flavor. The details of what is on stage is what comes from Tom's memory of his family home.

NCSC: Are you painting the props?

JK: I am. Everything will be white, but not necessarily the same shades of white. Also, we're making decisions about flat paint versus paint with a sheen. It's been interesting to think about whether it'd be more distracting to see flat paint on something you know in your mind is shiny or vice versa. It really gets into the peculiarities of detail. Also, we have to test out what paints work best for which items so it won't flake off on the actors, since the costumes are in color.

NCSC: Well, Jessica, thanks for taking the time to give us an interview, and best of luck with the menagerie and everything else! Keep us updated.

Rattlesnake opened yesterday! That's right, John Hardy is here in Asheville and we had the first performance last night here at NC Stage. If you haven't heard yet, the Mountain Xpress declared Rattlesnake a "Smart Bet" in this week's issue. If that doesn't do it for you, we've got some familiar faces from our stage - Andrew Livingston and Julia VanderVeen - to vouch for John Hardy and his great work.

Goings-on at NC Stage

Wow! It's May already? Amazing.

Time just keeps blowing by around this place with everything going on.

It's hard to believe that in exactly four weeks, The Glass Menagerie opens! That's right, our final Mainstage production of the 2010-2011 season is quickly approaching. It's actually a co-production with the Immediate Theatre Project, and we're excited about it. It runs June 1-19, so Pay-What-You-Can Night is the first performance -- Wednesday, June 1. Wondering about how PWYC Night works? One of our older posts from the blog really breaks it down for you, so be sure to check that out.

Tickets went on sale to the public on Monday, and this Sunday, May 8, Mother's Day, we have our (For)Play Reading of The Glass Menagerie. If you've never been to a (For)Play Reading before, you're missing out. You get to hear the actors do a read-through of the play before rehearsals actually start. If you enjoy watching the artistic process unfold, we encourage you to come to this initial reading and then buy a ticket to see the fully realized production. For an even more in-depth look, buy a copy of the script at Malaprop's Bookstore, which is stocking all of NC Stage's plays this season. Plus, since it's a holiday and all, we're making this (For)Play extra special and bringing you free coffee and baked goods!

Also, as this week is National Teacher Appreciation Week, we've announced that teachers get free tickets to see this production of The Glass Menagerie for the first week of the run. "[It's] a gesture of gratitude to the hard work of teachers in the community and a celebration of the end of the school year. Equally important, this is a relatively rare opportunity for area teachers and students to see a live, professional production of a play that is often taught in schools." So what else? In case you haven't heard, Sugar Shack Burlesque is performing one night only at NC Stage tomorrow, Thursday, May 5. I'm pretty sure that with all the buzz in the paper lately, it's going to fill up quickly.

Then next weekend, May 12-14, we have our second to last (penultimate... I like that word) Catalyst Series production of the season as well. It's a one-man show called Rattlesnake, and it's written and performed by John Hardy, acclaimed actor and director from the Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Virginia. Want to see a glimpse of it? Also coming up, we have the final performance of our students, both youth and adults, in our Acting Intensives who have taken classes with Michael MacCauley for twelve weeks this spring. That performance is Sunday, May 15 at 7 PM at NC Stage, and it's free!... though we welcome any donations, as they go towards supporting NC Stage's Education Program offerings including in-school residencies, after-school programs, outreach to local schools and colleges, and acting classes.

It's the End of the World!: Suggested Viewing

Hurray! More apocalyptic suggestions! Today, our suggestions have to do with movies (or TV shows... or TV movies) that deal with end-of-the-world or post-apocalypse type scenarios. As London was seemingly experiencing the wrath of God in the mid-1660s (the Great Plague in 1664-5 and then the Great Fire in 1666), we figured to get you in the mindset of the characters of One Flea Spare, we'd give you some panic-inducing and slightly terrifying things to watch. [Oh, quick disclaimer: I have seen only one of the movies listed below, but the rest I recommend sheerly because from my research on them got me really intrigued. They're on my list now.]

To kick things off, we have the TV movie The Day After. I initially heard about this from a list of Apocalyptic songs that someone put together for an awesome college radio station near Baltimore. Then I found out that John Lithgow was in it. WHAT!?!??! I've been watching a lot of Third Rock from the Sun lately, so I love that guy. Anyhow, nuclear war, etc. etc. My take on it from reading about people's reactions was that it was like War of the Worlds for the TV generation. Pretty epic. And terrifying. I mean, it's set in the midwest, and as a middle-American, I find tornadoes terrifying, so nuclear disasters just make my brain want to explode with the panic it instills in me. AHH!

Next we have the recent movie 2012. With the tagline "We were warned," you can imagine the distances this disaster film takes us. O-ver the top. Haven't seen it, but my uncle told me, "Yeah, it makes you re-think the whole living in California thing." I'm not a huge John Cusack fan, so I don't know whether this movie will be at the top of my to-see list, but as it's in the end-of-the-world category, I'm sharing it with you.

Additionally, we should mention the History Channel's series Life After People. It's been on my list for a while. Take Chernobyl, then expand that across the globe. What would happen after all human life disappeared? Holy whoa, here's a show to speculate on the possibilities. This earth takes a whole lotta upkeep... in the human inhabited bits at least.

Of course, we would be remiss to neglect the genre of zombie-related apocalypse movies, as there are plenty of those and with zombies seemingly ever present in pop culture lately, so in that vein we have Zombieland. I haven't seen it, but take a look at the cast: Woody Harrelson - excellent in most everything he does; Jesse Eisenberg - did you see The Social Network? Wow. He's one to watch; Emma Stone - talented - I saw her in Easy A and was a little surprised I liked it, but anyhow, she's a good 'un; and Abigail Breslin - remember Olive from Little Miss Sunshine? It's the same young actress but a few years older and she looks like a bada** on the poster. Even though zombies aren't really my thing, I'm definitely going to check this one out. Plus, my boyfriend keeps telling me I need to see it.

In this zombie movie vein, Charlie keeps bringing up 28 Days Later. Yet another movie I haven't seen, but it's done by Danny Boyle and he's one talented fellow, so it's worth a watch.

And finally, for a slightly more family-friendly end-of-the-world movie, I highly recommend Disney and Pixar's Wall-E. Set in the future, it deals less with a sense of impending doom, disaster, and destruction and more with the aftermath of all that. However, viewing it from present day gives the kidlets (and parents) a chance to think about how present choices and actions affect the future and how to be mindful and make changes in positive ways. It also helps the viewer to find what is meaningful in your day-to-day life.

"Setting" One Flea Spare

Our last post had to do with putting the fictional Snelgraves into historical and geographical reality with their would-be neighbor, Samuel Pepys. Today's post is in a similar vein in that it's about taking the description of the setting given by Ms. Wallace, the playwright, and bringing it to the physical reality of NC Stage's space.

Here's the description of the setting:
"A room that has been stripped of all its fine furnishings, except for a couple of simple, though fine, wooden chairs. One small window upstage.

A cell or room of confinement.

The street below the window of the Snelgraves' house."

So how does that all come together and mesh with the ideas of the director and other designers? Well, there are a series of production meetings where discussions occur, ideas are thrown out and others replace them, decisions are made and eventually action must take place. In the slideshow below, you can see the evolution of the set design from model through construction through painting to completion (roughly). In some of the painting pictures, you can see the Scene Designer himself, James Johnson. You can also see how with the design of the set, we made the decision to bring in the seating of our side sections, as the playing space is a bit more confined than usual. (They're great seats, by the way...)

"Placing" One Flea Spare

It takes a good deal of research to write a historical piece that rings as true as One Flea Spare, and playwright Naomi Wallace did some real research. At the end of the text of her play is a 'Select Bibliography' where she cites among other books, A Journal of the Plague Year by Daniel Defoe and The Illustrated Pepys: Extracts from the Diary. These two books I highlight because I've read selections from each in a couple classes I took in college, and they both illustrate vividly the way things were in the time, though one is fiction (Defoe's Plague Year).

At the beginning of the play (and written in our playbill) it states the time, place, and setting* of the action in the play. It's 1665 in "a comfortable house in Axe Yard, off King Street, Westminster, London." Curious to know whether this was a real street, I went to the internet and immediately checked out Google Maps. (I had done this once before with the latitude and longitude given by the Stage Manager in Our Town, and found that Grover's Corners was much like Atlantis, as its coordinates placed it in the ocean, not in New Hampshire at all.) To my delight, I found a resource that had the historical placement of where the Snelgraves' home might have been!

See the little red A? Yeah, that's about where the Snelgraves' house would've been.

"Axe Yard was a cul-de-sac right in the heart of Westminster. There were 25 houses along the length of the Yard and the larger ones were owned by wealthy well connected families, it had a narrow entrance into King Street next to the Axe Tavern, and was only a short walk away from King Street gate into Whitehall Palace [...] If you turned right on leaving Axe Yard, a short walk would bring you to Westminster Palace, Parliament and the offices of the Exchequer where [Samuel Pepys] then worked under George Downing." -- from: http://www.pepysdiary.com/p/102.php#discussion

I found this information fascinating as it not only connected the fictional Snelgraves socially to the real Pepys in my head, but it also gave me a nice visual as to where geographically they fit in the city. Having looked back at that, it made Snelgrave's line really click into context for me, as Samuel Pepys had indeed worked for the Navy Board. Says Snelgrave, "I know a bit about the waters myself. I work for the Navy Board, just down the lane, on Seething. My friend Samuel and I, we control the largest commercial venture in the country, hmm. The Royal Dockyards." According to Wikipedia, "On the Navy Board, Pepys proved to be a more able and efficient worker than colleagues in higher positions: a fact that often annoyed Pepys, and provoked much harsh criticism in his diary."

And while we're talking about similarities between Mr. Snelgrave and Samuel Pepys, here's another: having their way with the servants. From Wikipedia: "The most dramatic of these encounters was with Deborah Willet, a young woman engaged as a companion for Elisabeth Pepys [his wife]. On 25 October 1668 Pepys was surprised by his wife whilst embracing Deborah Willet: he writes that his wife 'coming up suddenly, did find me imbracing the girl con my hand sub su coats; and endeed I was with my main in her cunny. I was at a wonderful loss upon it and the girl also....'" I imagine you got the gist of what Mr. Pepys was saying, but in case you didn't, here's why: "these [liaisons] were chronicled in his diary, often in some detail, and generally using a cocktail of languages (English, French, Spanish and Latin) when relating the intimate details."

It's the Apocalypse!: Suggested Reading

While no, it is not really the apocalypse, that was the general consensus when the Great Plague was ravaging London in 1665, so I've collected some appropriate songs, movies, and books for you to check out (potentially at your local library) in the spirit of such an existential panic. I've gleaned some of the selections from NC Stage staff, but others come from lists and collections found on the world wide web. I'll be sharing them on the blog over the course of the run of One Flea Spare with a focus on books today... and one video, too. Enjoy!

To kick things off, a quintessential apocalyptic song (in video form): R.E.M.'s "It's the End of the World (As We Know It)." For a fun nugget of trivia, here's an article about the boy in the video.

So, to books! First, a shout-out and thank-you to our neighbors and collaborators, Malaprop's Bookstore, for being our script purveyor this season and also for a One Flea Spare-focused display up at the store as well as in our lobby.

We've got a collection of Naomi Wallace's plays entitled In the Heart of America and Other Plays that includes One Flea Spare, so if you find yourself drawn in by Ms. Wallace's writing, this is a book you'll want to pick up.

We also have Daniel Defoe's A Journal of the Plague Year. Although a fictional account of the Great Plague in 1665 London, "Many critics over the years have judged it to be a more inciteful account of the awful events of 1665 than the eyewitness account written by Samuel Pepys."

Our book selection doesn't focus solely around the bubonic plague, the 1660s, and England, though. We have two books about more recent 'plagues' in the United States.

POX: An American History by Michael Willrich "offers a gripping chronicle of how the nation's continentwide fight against smallpox launched one of the most important civil liberties struggles of the twentieth century. At the dawn of the activist Progressive era and during a moment of great optimism about modern medicine, the government responded to the deadly epidemic by calling for universal compulsory vaccination." Recently featured on NPR!

The other 'plague' book set in America is My Own Country: A Doctor's Story by Abraham Verghese. This true story took place not far from Asheville -- Johnson City, Tennessee -- and tells how the small town grapples with AIDS in the 1980s and how Dr. Verghese, an infectious disease specialist, by necessity becomes the AIDS expert. This book, according to wikipedia, "is used in colleges and medical schools throughout North America and across the world because of the way it communicates the sense of empathy and compassion so often missing in medical school education in an era of high technology and reliance on computers as primary diagnostic tools."

So how 'bout some others?

"Surely there are lots more than those they're selling in the lobby," you're thinking. Well, you're right! Congratulations.

- The Road by Cormac McCarthy -- Set after some unnamed disaster, a father and son journey through a post-apocalyptic landscape. Don't know much else than that since I haven't read it myself, but one of my college roommates loved the book, and I recently picked up the book on CD version from the library, so I'm psyched to listen. It also won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, so obviously, it's quality stuff.

- Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies by Jared Diamond -- A non-fiction book that's been on my list for a while now (still haven't acquired it yet), Bill Gates says of Guns, Germs, and Steel, "Fascinating... Lays a foundation for understanding human history." While not necessarily apocalyptic, from what I understand, it gives some insight into why certain societies are no longer around today. You know, evolutionary biology.

- World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks -- For those who take the more horror/sci-fi perspective to the apocalypse, this one's for you. "The end was near. Zombies were taking over. They were infiltrating every corner the world. No neutral ground existed, no nation was secure, and we were in serious danger of becoming extinct - overrun by hordes of the living dead."

- Year of Wonders: A Novel of the Plague by Geraldine Brooks -- Recommended by our props mistress, Jessica, this novel is set during the same time as the play (1660s), but in a rural setting. From a blurb: "Cocooned from the outside world and ravaged by the disease, [the village's] inhabitants struggle to retain their humanity in the face of the disaster. The narrator, the young widow Anna Frith, is one of the few who succeeds."

In your 'flea' time, some poems.

One. Flea. Spare.
I break it down like that so that you get each word. Trust me, it's much easier when you see the words than simply hearing them. When someone first told me what the season line up of plays was, I thought the play was called "One Fleece Bear." In taking ticket orders, we've gotten orders for "One Flea Square," "One Tree Square," and "One Flea Space." To clarify things, let me share with you the origin of the title: John Donne's poem "The Flea."

Mark but this flea, and mark in this,

How little that which thou deniest me is;

Me it sucked first, and now sucks thee,

And in this flea our two bloods mingled be;

Thou know’st that this cannot be said

A sin, or shame, or loss of maidenhead,

Yet this enjoys before it woo,

And pampered swells with one blood made of two,

And this, alas, is more than we would do.

Oh stay, three lives in one flea spare,

Where we almost, nay more than married are.

And since we're on the topic of fleas, I would like to share a poem I first encountered on the wall of my sixth grade team teacher's classroom and found again recently thanks to the world wide web. It has to do with a flea, so if you were curious about the connection, there you go. It exemplifies homophones and alliteration, both things I love.

A fly and a flea flew up in a flue.

Said the fly to the flea, "What shall we do?"

"Let's fly," said the flea.

"Let's flee," said the fly.

So they fluttered and flew up the flaw in the flue.

If only the characters of One Flea Spare could escape their confinement so easily...

We here at NC Stage love farce. Last year we had Joe Orton's What the Butler Saw, and in our earlier years we produced Loot, also by Orton. The first play Scott & Charlie ever performed in together was one of Marc Camoletti's other famous plays, Don't Dress for Dinner. Both are fans of the genre and have keen acting skills for farce. Celebrate Valentine's Day with NC Stage

Aren't these androgynous cherubs just so adorable?

Yes, in case you haven't gotten around to looking at a calendar lately, it's quite obvious that Valentine's Day is fast approaching. What's been on our mind lately though is the fast approaching arrival of Boeing-Boeing. We've had our set being built, more lobby renovation going on, special events happening, and general hub-bub of a Mainstage production drawing near, so if you're feeling like there's a bazillion things going on in your life, we feel you. And now Valentine's Day is right around the corner...

Our advice? Celebrate a little late.

Valentine's Day shouldn't be a stress-fest, so take your time and join us sometime after Valentine's Day (perhaps between February 16 and March 13?) for an afternoon or evening at the theatre where you can feel intimately connected with our actors as well as your fellow audience members. Go out for lunch or dinner beforehand, see the show, then get some chocolate afterwards. Sounds delightful, right? And another great thing about it is you can do all this by supporting local businesses. We love Asheville, and we love you. So buy you and your sweetheart (or a friend) some tickets, and come see us. We're looking forward to our belated celebration with you.

Pay-What-You-Can Night: February 16th!

Amazingly, we still have some tickets available for Boeing-Boeing's Pay-What-You-Can Night Wednesday, February 16th. Sometimes folks don't call for tickets because they think the performance is full, or that they don't qualify - not true! You can still get tickets, but don't wait too long!

For fun, here's a little FAQ about our Pay-What-You-Can Nights, which we've been doing since our very first performance in 2002.

Q: Can I really pay what I want? What's the catch?
A: Well, there is a $6 minimum, but other than that, you truly can pay what you can afford. It's an honor system. We don't even ask for your tax return!

Q: How can you possibly afford to give out $6 tickets?
A: We do take a big hit on Pay-What-You-Can Nights, but we're able to subsidize the costs because we're a non-profit and we have a loyal group of supporters. Our individual donors and business sponsors make it possible, so if you see a name in the playbill that you recognize, please thank them for making theatre affordable for our community!

Q: How do I know when you're going to have a Pay-What-You-Can Night?
A: For Mainstage productions, Pay-What-You-Can Night is always the first Wednesday of the run. Sometimes the companies we host through our Catalyst Series also choose to do a Pay-What-You-Can Night. We'll always post the information on our website and include it in our email newsletters.

Q: Wow, this is a really generous offer. How can I help support it?

A: Thanks, that's very kind of you! It costs about $1,000 to subsidize each Pay-What-You-Can Night. You could sponsor an individual Pay-What-You-Can performance for that amount and be recognized on all of our marketing and publicity. Or you can support NC Stage's annual fund with a gift of any amount. Contact our Development Director Barbara Benisch for more information.

Q: I heard you have to fight for a seat that night. What gives?
A: We've gotten much more efficient at seating over the years. Just call ahead to get your name is on the list, then pay for your tickets and choose your seats the night of the show. Our box office opens at 6:00pm, so the earlier you get here, the better choice of seats you get. Once you have your tickets, you can go have dinner, or make yourself comfortable in our lobby and enjoy our concessions until the show begins at 7:30pm. No need to elbow anyone for a seat.

Q: What if I forgot to call ahead - am I out of luck?
A: No! Make sure you get on the waiting list. Despite everyone's best intentions, there are always some cancellations and no-shows. If patrons haven't shown up by 10 minutes before curtain, we start offering tickets to the waiting list. You have to be here in person to get waiting list tickets, but isn't that worth it for a $6 ticket?

Q: How do I pay for my tickets?
A: We apologize for any inconvenience, but for maximum efficiency in the box office, we only accept cash, and we're not able to make change. There's is an ATM just two blocks from NC Stage, and our box office staff will be happy to give you directions.

Q: What about nickels, dimes and quarters?
A: We'll be honest, it's kind of a hassle for our box office staff. But it's legal tender, so we'll take it! We recommend counting the coins out ahead of time, or you may get some glares from the patrons in line behind you. (On the other hand, we do love dollar coins - they're so handy for getting out of the parking garage!)

Suggested Listening: On Flying

Since Boeing-Boeing is tangentially about flying, I've been looking into other forms of entertainment that deal with aviation and found quite a lot of material. Initially I was looking into books about flying and airline hostesses, but then I got thinking about movies and music, too. For this post, I'll be focusing on songs about flying, planes, all that air travel-y stuff.

Before we move forward, I must say, to get some of today's material for this post I navigated parts of the internet I'd never thought I'd see: Airline Pilot forums. There I found five pages of suggested flying-related songs and commentary on the songs... and something about a video done by the Blue Angels and some funky breathing technique used by fighter pilots in certain situations so they can keep blood in their brains. Eye-opening, really. Anyhow, the favorites of the pilot crowd ranged from "Spirit in the Sky" by Norman Greenbaum to "Danger Zone" by Kenny Loggins (from the Top Gun soundtrack). Other songs mentioned were Lenny Kravitz's "Fly Away," Guns N' Roses' "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," "Learning to Fly" by both Pink Floyd and Tom Petty, Jimmy Buffett's "Jamaica Mistaka," Elton John's "Rocket Man," Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Zephyr," and "Magic Carpet Ride" by Steppenwolf.

Of course there were more, but it got me thinking... what are some favorite flying/plane/air travel songs of the NC Stage staff? And the responses...

- Willie: "Indigo Girls, 'Airplane.' It's goofy, but it gets stuck in my head on a surprising number of flights. Others that spring to mind are Nanci Griffith's 'Flier,' which is sad and sweet, and of course 'Back in the U.S.S.R.'"

- Amanda: "'Leavin' on a Jet Plane' by John Denver. Love me some John Denver. Makes me tear up. Totally different: 'The Letter' by the Box Tops - awesome sing-along at the top of your voice when you're driving. 'Get me a ticket for an aeroplane, ain't got time to take a fast train...'"

- Melinda: "Red Hot Chili Peppers - 'Aeroplane'... though it has some strong language. Gary Allen's 'Watching Airplanes' or Steve Miller Band's 'Jet Airliner' are good ones, too."

- Lauren (me): I love me some Ben Folds, so I'm going to have to mention 'Landed', but I love Ol' Blue Eyes and his song 'Come Fly with Me,' too. However I always think of the Junior Birdman song that my mom taught me as a kid.

- Charlie: "It's a tie between 'Snakes On A Plane (Bring It)' by Cobra Starship, and 'Final Countdown' by Europe. Enjoy!"

Boeing-Boeing: From Hollywood to Bollywood

In one of our first staff meetings of the new year while we were discussing Boeing-Boeing, someone mentioned that while they were describing the play to a friend, that friend stopped them and said, "Isn't that a Tony Curtis movie?" True! The play was made into a movie in 1965 starring Jerry Lewis and Tony Curtis and was actually nominated for two Golden Globes. Despite that fact and the fact that the play was revived in a Broadway production back in 2008 (and won two Tony awards), it's surprisingly hard to find the movie version today. You can't find it on Netflix, but you can find it in 10-minute segments on YouTube and sold in VHS format on obscure websites, but that's about as good as it gets. I posted a clip from the movie in one of our previous posts, just so you can get a taste of what it's like.

However, while I was reading the Wikipedia article about the 1965 movie, I found out there have been two, yes TWO, Bollywood remakes of the film: one actually titled Boeing-Boeing (1985), and the other, made by the same guy -- Priyadarshan -- twenty years later, entitled Garam Masala (2005). From my anecdotal research, it seems that the director's second incarnation of the film is the one that was more popular. Shocked at the novelty of my discovery, I decided to see if I could find a copy of the movie, and lo and behold, Netflix came through in my search. I put it at the top of my queue and waited for it to arrive.

Remember that 'snow event' in mid-January? Well, the movie arrived in the mail shortly before that, so when I found myself snow-bound at home, I sat myself down ready for a laugh. Yes, I laughed occasionally, but ouch! It was kind of painful. Maybe my perspective was tainted by the fact that I couldn't manage to get the DVD menu to work properly for a good half hour since it was produced in India and the Citibank India ads couldn't be skipped as I went back trying to set the subtitles to English, but still I can't believe I made it through. (Well, actually, I took a break half-way through for about 45 minutes so I could wring out my brain, but I did finish watching the movie.) I'm not advocating for or against the movie, I'm just saying it was a doozy.

I feel the play's silliness is nicely compact, so as silly as the story is already, I couldn't believe that they decided to ADD to it for the Bollywood movie. With the additional story elements and the songs (that don't seem to connect much with the plot in my opinion), the movie came out to be about two-and-a-half hours long. Despite all that was added, a lot is very similar to the 1965 film. In fact, someone made a couple YouTube videos illustrating the parallels between the movies, which is pretty neat. The quality of the videos aren't top notch but it's fun to watch, and I think it brings across the sense of speed in the story -- the ladies coming and going, the kitchen orders changing, all that chaotic hilarity. It's up to you whether you decide to rent the DVD, but either way, I think the videos are worth a watch. Enjoy!

First off, we want to give a big THANK YOU to everyone who came out the Reuter Center on Sunday to watch our (For)Play reading of Boeing-Boeing. As Charlie said, we hope it "puts you in the mood" to come see it when we open in mid-February (hint hint... get your tickets soon!). We're excited about it: we've got a great group of designers and a fantastic cast -- Scott & Charlie, Maria Buchanan, Vivian Smith, Julia Vanderveen, and Paige Posey -- and they start rehearsals tonight and continue them this week, provided it's not snowing-snowing. (Haha!)

If you missed the (For)Play reading and you aren't familiar with the play, here's the premise: Bernard is a successful businessman living in Paris whose three stewardess girlfriends never cross paths because they work for different airlines and, as Bernard says, "The whole secret is order. I am organized- beautifully organized. (...) All you need is a timetable." But, as we all know, jets get faster, weather delays occur, and timetables become irrelevant. Fortunately, Bernard has his maid/cook/servant/assistant Bertha and his old friend Robert to help him manage things. As Bernard puts it, "Yes, it is a bit touch and go today. But today's an exception. (...) Normally it's perfectly straightforward." How will it all unfold? Join us in February and you'll find out!

Acting Intensives Open Performance

In case you weren't aware, back in September, we kicked off the first classes in our Acting Intensives. Twenty local actors - both youth and adults - took our classes, Acting I or Creating a Character, to hone their skills and pick up new ones. Taught by Michael MacCauley, these students worked long and hard on the monologues and scenes all through the fall and are ready to perform them in front of a live audience - YOU!

And now for the reeeeeeally scary ghost! The ghost of Theatre Future!

Well, not really. The future looks good doesn’t it? At NC Stage we’re looking forward to beginning rehearsals for Boeing-Boeing in the immediate future. Scott Treadway and I have done three shows together over the past year and I directed him in one. But with all that time spent with Treadway over the last year, I’m still looking forward to spending even MORE time with him on Boeing-Boeing.

Later this spring, One Flea Spare will be directed by Angie and I know she’s been looking forward to that one for a while. What an amazing play! And then our Immediate Theatre Project friends, (the ITPeeps) will round out the year with what I’m sure will be an amazing production of the American classic, The Glass Menagerie.

As we wrap up this season, we’re also thinking ahead to future seasons. Next season will mark our 10th season of producing professional theatre in Asheville. It’s almost unbelievable to me that we’ve been doing this for 10 years.

So, what do we do to mark the occasion? Every one around the office is just itching to do part 2 of Angels In America, maybe along with part one performed in repertory… There are other plays on our short list for next season for next season that are pretty exciting to us, but we’re always interested to hear suggestions (feel free to post something in the comments if you have ideas).

As for the long-term future, there are a couple of big projects that Angie and I have been day-dreaming about, which we hope will turn into a reality, just as our daydream of a professional theatre in Asheville has become a reality. One of those daydreams involves another local arts organization, with whom we’ve recently worked, and a possible co-production of a profoundly amazing play. Another involves a collaboration with a funk band on a Shakespeare play. And yet another involves an adaptation of a novel that has a lot of meaning for Angie and me (we were both reading it when we started dating) and a lot of meaning for Western North Carolina. And it would involve music too. How can anything about Western North Carolina NOT involve music?

But of course, all these things are only possible with the support of our community. I hope you’ll take an opportunity before the tax year ends to support NC Stage’s work THIS year.

So thankful. A visit from the ghost of theatre present.

I hope your holiday weekend was pleasant and stress free and that you were able to celebrate and commemorate the story that means the most to you. Asheville had a white Christmas, which was actually really pleasant and relaxing, considering the busy fall we’ve had at NC Stage!

How busy, you ask?

We started out with the news that we had been voted readers favorite theatre company in the Mountain Xpress readers poll right before we dove into the Bard-a-thon back in September and about 200 participants read 12 Shakespeare plays over a 48 hour period. And yes, it was fun! But it also raised around $9,000 toward our programming and it was a great kick off to an exciting season.

Immediately after that wound down, and I mean immediately, we started rehearsals for Angels in America. Angie directed that so I was hanging with our kids while she tackled that behemoth of a play. Nearly 2,000 people attended Angels. It’s a play we’ve wanted to produce for quite awhile and we feel very fortunate that we got to do it and that we received such a positive response from the audience.

Then, while that was going on, we started rehearsals for three, count ‘em, THREE productions of Live From WVL Radio Theatre: It’s A Wonderful Life. This adaptation of the movie is something we’ve been doing with our partners Immediate Theatre Project (or the ITPeeps as we like to call them) since 2006.

Production #1 was a partnership with Flat Rock Playhouse, with performances at the Historic Henderson County Courthouse. On December 4th that cast moved to Charlotte where we partnered with the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center for a 2 week run in the Booth Theatre, while a replacement cast rehearsed and opened at the Courthouse in Hendersonville (Production #2) . I directed those productions so I had 2 trips to Charlotte in as many days! Meanwhile, our tour version – Production #3, produced by Immediate Theatre Project, was rehearsing and then went out on a multi-state tour that wound up on December 23rd in Newton-Conover, NC after visiting Maryland, Ohio, Illinois, Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee. All told, more than 5,000 people attended these three productions and experienced the message that “one person’s life touches so many others”.

Then MEANWHILE, Angie was directing scenes from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream for the Asheville Symphony Orchestra’s performance of Mendelssohn’s Midsummer at the Thomas Wolf Auditorium in mid November. It was a fantastic blending of actors, instruments, and voices.

We’re pooped. But it’s a good kind of pooped, and we are really enjoying the quiet of the snow before the storm of the second half of our season. More on that in the third email you will be visited by soon.

So as I reflect on the first part of the season with its great partnerships and collaborations and think to the next part, I’m reminded of something I read earlier today. (ok, I was perusing Twitter and came across this tweet); “Do NOT use this week to plan for 2011. Devote this week to thanking folks for support in the past year.”

If I don’t say it enough, let me say it now. Thank you. To all of the people who value theatre and NC Stage, to the hard working professionals that it’s my privilege to work with every day, to the board of directors, to everyone of you who’ve attended a play or convinced one of your friends to come see a play, and to every one of you who’ve contributed time, resources and money to NC Stage. Your support counts more than we can ever express and we are indeed lucky to be in such a beautiful, supportive place with people like you.

Warmest of holiday greetings to you!

Recently I've been thinking about an aspect of the holiday season that is often overlooked. Whatever you celebrate during this time of year, it’s all predicated on a story. And not just any story, but a compelling story about triumph over adversity, about compassion from strangers, about hope for a future of peace and kindness.

The existence of NC Stage is also predicated on the notion of telling stories. We seek out plays that capture the imagination and speak to some universal truth about the human experience. A playwright's job is to take these universal, abstract stories and make them concrete for us - to connect them to the here and now. And our job as theatre professionals is to create a conduit between the audience and the playwright’s story. Whether it’s a Shakespeare tragedy or an American classic or a contemporary drama or farce, the plays we produce help us understand the unfamiliar and experience the familiar in a new and profound way.

We hope that you value this as a vital part of your life and as a necessary part of your community. We certainly couldn’t do it without your help and financial support, but more importantly, we couldn't do it without your participation in the performance. Art doesn’t exist in a vacuum. It exists to be seen and evaluated from the unique experience you bring to the theatre.

So as we all wind down this year and begin a new one, I'd like to take a moment to tell each other our stories. Think of the stories that have been an important part of who you are and where you’ve been. Please post a comment and tell us what plays you have found to be irresistibly compelling stories, and what you felt like after seeing them. Live from... the Historic Henderson County Courthouse?

YES! Today is the day! We have our first performance of our co-production of Live from WVL Radio Theatre: It's a Wonderful Life tonight, and we're excited. That's right, in case you haven't yet heard, we've partnered with Flat Rock Playhouse to mount our annual seasonal production of It's a Wonderful Life in the Historic Henderson County Courthouse in downtown Hendersonville. As a result of the change of location, there are now more opportunities to see the play! Opening today, Friday, November 19, and running through Thursday, December 23, there are 40 performances in total. A couple of other great things about this partnership are: 1) There is more parking (and it's FREE!) and, 2) The variety and opportunity to check out the many excellent restaurants in downtown Hendersonville -- including Flight Wood Grill & Wine Bar, Thai Spice, West First Wood-Fired Pizza, and others -- is fantastic.

NC Stage regularly collaborates with our Partner Company-in-Residence, immediate theatre project, to put this play on in the holiday season. In fact, the script is an adaptation by Willie Repoley, who is also performing in it. As is frequently said, theatre is a collaborative art, and when there are great artistic minds around, like there are down at Flat Rock Playhouse, it just seems natural to work together. Flat Rock had great results after mounting two productions in the courthouse earlier this year, 12 Angry Men and A Few Good Men, and we commend them for using a non-traditional performance space. If you got to see 12 Angry Men at the courthouse, then you got to see some of our favorite guys up on stage: Charlie, Willie, Michael MacCauley, and Scott Treadway, among others. (And you can see them on stage again soon!)

It's that time again... time for your monthly dose of 'No Shame Theatre' at NC Stage! No Shame Theatre is an open performance venue for original and compelling works of theatre. Pieces arrive up to an hour before show time. They’re cast, rehearsed, and put on stage in front of a live audience an hour later.

We have only three rules:

1) Work must be original,

2) Short (under 5 minutes), and,

3) You can't break anything or anyone.

This Saturday, November 13

10 PM to do it; 11 PM to watch other people do it.

It's hard to believe we're in our final week of performances of Angels in America: Millennium Approaches, but it's true. What does 'Angels' mean to you?

We're now entering our third week of performances of our production of Angels in America, Part One: Millennium Approaches, and we've heard wonderful responses from audience members afterwards. In fact, on Sunday, as a woman was leaving the building she told me in a whisper, "That was the best performance I've ever seen in my life." We've received great reviews from both the Asheville Citizen-Times and the Mountain Xpress, too. A lot of people, however, have told us, "I need some time with this one," and we understand. It's a doozy.

But if you have seen it -- either our production or elsewhere --

What does 'Angels' mean to you?

If you haven't been following the blog, you can go back and read what some of the designers and other production people have said about their experiences with the play. Also, we have what actor Willie Repoley shared with us on the significance of the play not just on a large scale, but personally as well. (A similar post about Angels that Willie wrote after we read Millennium Approaches a couple years ago in the (For)Play Series caught the attention of someone writing an article about the resurgence of Angels productions for its 20th anniversary, and now you can find a quote from Willie in the most recent Newsweek!)

Visual Stimuli: Worldwide 'Angels' Poster Designs

While I was doing some research on the production history of Angels in America, I came across a number of production posters from all over -- from college productions to Broadway, small town America to the Netherlands. Fascinating stuff, though many seem to focus heavily on the Angel or wings feature. Here are some I've come across... any thoughts, please share 'em! A more recent production of Angels from Amsterdam, the Netherlands... strays farther from the Angel/wing theme than many of the others.

Fort Lewis College in Colorado seemed to keep with the Angel bit for their poster, perhaps inspired by the Broadway poster, no? Very similar vulnerable pose for the angel.

Interesting choice for a poster design... really embraces the setting being that of New York. Quite busy design, wings are very eerie for this one.

Hmm... well, I know what play I'd be going to see, that's for sure. It just doesn't keep my attention for long.

I really like this one. It stays with the wing design, but remains simple and still it brings in the many themes of the play in the intricate feather-newspaper-clippings.

As the poster says, this was the design for the British Premiere in the early 90s. Like the previous poster, it is very simple, but visually appealing in its simplicity. This one was produced at The National Theatre.

Now this one has an interesting story... Intiman Theatre in Seattle produced both Part One (Millennium Approaches) and Part Two (Perestroika). From what I read on this design was that this poster was for Part One and the other half was for Part Two. The Intiman was the first regional theatre awarded the rights to the play, and Part One closed their 1994 season and Part Two opened their 1995 season. Perhaps the design seemed confusing to folks, but I find it very intriguing in the mystery of what is 'missing.'
